Department of statistics

The Chair of the Department is Dr., Associate Prof. Lilia Karpenko.

The department of statistics as a BSEU structural unit has been functioning since the academic year 1954/1955. The department's Chairs were: Dr. Associate Prof. A. Voropayeva, Dr. hab., Prof. A. Kazachenok, Dr. Associate Prof. A. Bulat, Dr. Associate Prof. I. Terlizhenko, Dr. Associate Prof. N. Timofeeva, Dr. hab., Prof. M. Novikov, Dr. Prof. I. Teslyuk. Since 2001 the department's Chair has been Dr. Associate Prof. L. Karpenko.

Among the department's alumni are the acting Minister of Statistics and Analysis V. Zinovski, Deputies minister of statistics and analysis G. Gasiuk, S. Novoselova , and Director of the Research Institute of Statistics V. Tamashevich.

The department employs 25 faculty and staff members, among them are 1 professor, 13 associate professors with a Ph.D. degree in economics, 1 senior instructor, 8 assistant lecturers, a secretary and a typist.

The department is the only one in Belarus that trains specialists majoring in Statistics (major code 1-25 01 05).

The teaching process is carried out in accordance with the syllabus approved by the Ministry of Education of Belarus and Educational standard of the major 1-25 01 05, Statistics.

The department teaches 34 special disciplines, including:

  • Theory of statistics; statistics; statistic analysis of macroeconomic indicators;
  • Statistics of population; international statistics; price statistics; financial-banking statistics; statistics in industry; statistics in agriculture; statistics in capital construction; statistics in commerce; balance of payments statistics;
  • Statistics of households; statistics in tourism and hotel management; multi-dimensional methods of statistics; environmental statistics.

The department has close contacts with the Ministry of statistics and analysis of Belarus and state agency “Research Institute of Statistics Under the Ministry of statistics and analysis of Belarus ”, with which a tri-partite agreement on cooperation was signed. Since January 1, 2004, there has been functioning the department's branch at the Research Institute of Statistics Under the Ministry of statistics and analysis of Belarus.

Most of the faculty and doctoral students are member of the Belarusian Statistics Association (BSA) established in 1998.

The training of scientists of higher qualification through post-graduate courses and courses for degree seekers at the department. In 2007/2008 the department trains 1 post-doctoral student, 6 doctoral students and 5 master's students. Over the recent 5 years, the department enjoyed 1 Dr. hab. and 5 PhD dissertations defended.

In the period of 2005-2007, the following text-books were authored by the department:

In the period of 2006-2007, the faculty published 21 scholarly articles.

The main scholarly research directions:

  • Statistic analysis and modeling of RB economy's sustainable development indicators (state register No. 2005 35 46);
  • Methodology of statistic modeling and analysis of ecoproducts flow in the system of modified inter-sector relations;
  • Statistic evaluation of employing the human capital in the Republic of Belarus ;
  • Statistic evaluation and modeling of processes of equilibrium strengthening of economic dynamics in the global system of export-import relations;
  • Statistic evaluation of coordination between demographic and economic development in the Republic of Belarus ;
  • Statistic evaluation and modeling of interrelation of BOP indicators in Belarus ;
  • Research of totality of controllable and uncontrollable inflation factors at macro-level;
  • Statistic modeling and analysis of economic processes in rural areas of Belarus with regard to the demographic factor.
